If you've been following my art journey for the last few years, I have mentioned my daughter Saniyah a handful of times. How becoming a mom has changed me in more ways than I could ever imagine. How I painted backdrops for her monthly photoshoots for her first year. How we've been painting together as our mommy-daughter activity.
I was about 6 months pregnant with her when I curated and hosted my first art show.
Needless to say, she has become a huge part of my art practice.
So imagine my shock when a few months ago, we were painting regularly, and I happen to look over and I see this.
🤯 My mind was literally blown away lol. This is by far her best painting. I know for some, their 3-year-old painting boobs so accurately might send off different alarms in their head, but for me, I felt an overwhelming sense of joy and pride.
She painted this FOR me, she related boobs to her mom and the time we've spent together cuddling and bonding over the years. Not to mention she was breastfed for a little over 2 years, and naturally nursed kids have an attachment to boobs. So this wasn't surprising at all to me. Rather than discouraging her or shaming her for her innocent creation and celebration of motherhood, I not only kept the painting (it sits on my desk currently), but I put the design on T-shirts.
I can honestly say I'm looking forward to continuing making art with my daughter, and I can't wait to see what else she creates.
